Ovation Beneath Lions Gate
A crowded open deck, the Vancouver skyline, and the passage beneath Lions Gate Bridge made sailaway feel like a milestone.
THE FILM BEHIND THE STORY
Sailaway toward Lions Gate
The original shipboard clip keeps the crowd, skyline, and approach together. At the time, I described Ovation of the Seas as the largest cruise ship ever to sail beneath Lions Gate Bridge; that record wording remains my account of the day.
The open decks filled because everybody understood that the bridge was more than scenery. It was the narrow frame the ship had to pass through, with Vancouver falling behind us and the voyage opening on the other side.
I remember the scale through the people at the rail. A ship can be enormous from shore and still make the passengers aboard feel small when the structure ahead seems to lower over the deck.
The video belongs with Scooter’s journeys because a milestone is also a place. Vancouver, the harbor, the bridge, and the passengers watching together gave this departure its exact setting.
Scooter gives this moment a soundtrack for a Vancouver sailaway framed by skyline, bridge, and open water: “Believe” by Cher .
