Why are action loss and points different numbers?

Separate cumulative wagers, actual cash results, theoretical loss and casino points with a clear educational example drawn from Scott Astin’s teaching.

Begin with what moved through the machine

If I put in forty dollars, is that forty dollars of coin-in?

It might be the first part of the action, but it is not necessarily the total. Coin-in counts wagers. Returned credits that you wager again add to that count. Scott’s memoir explains how a modest amount of supplied cash can produce more cumulative action through replayed credits. That does not make the extra action free; cashable credits still have value when you choose to risk them again.

What tells me whether I actually won or lost money?

The cash record. Track what you supplied, any additions and what you withdrew. Keep promotional balances and their conversion separate so you do not count an unwithdrawable credit as cash. A machine’s displayed award is one event. It may not account for all the money spent earlier in the session. A points total answers another question again.

Explain the model without pretending to know it

What is theoretical loss?

An estimate based on the gaming action and assumptions used by the operator’s model. For a clearly illustrative calculation, assume ten thousand dollars in eligible action and a ten percent modeled hold. Multiplying those gives one thousand dollars of theoretical loss. That is not a statement that the player lost one thousand dollars, and it is not a forecast of the next trip.

Are points simply the same as theoretical loss?

Not universally. Use the actual program’s earning rule. Scott discusses a coin-in-to-point rate for the circumstances in his book, while the additional draft discusses broader casino incentives. Keep those ideas separate. We do not know every provider’s internal offer formula just because we can calculate an example. Cruise loyalty points are also a different system from casino points.

Read the ledger before the headline

When each number has its own meaning, the record becomes much less dramatic and much more useful. You can see action without mistaking it for supplied cash, a win without calling it net profit and a point total without treating it as income. The full books explain how those measurements fit into Scott’s longer travel system.

Keep each measurement in its own column.

Cash result
What you supplied and what you returned with.
Coin-in
Cumulative wagers, including replayed credits.
Theoretical loss
An operator’s modeled estimate, not your actual result.
Casino points
A program measurement governed by its earning rules.
